Enhancing the E2P Diabetes Tool: Co-Designing with Clinicians to Support Better Care

At Amplify Care, we believe the best digital health tools are built with clinicians, not simply for clinicians.

That’s why co-design is one of our fundamental pillars. Clinicians understand the realities of care delivery—the workflows, competing priorities, local resources, and practical challenges that can be difficult to capture from a technology perspective alone. Their expertise is essential to creating tools that are genuinely useful in practice.

Putting co-design into practice

Our work to enhance the Evidence2Practice Ontario (E2P) diabetes tool for TELUS PS Suite is a great example.

Based on valuable feedback from users and the latest clinical standards, we’re introducing several enhancements designed to better support clinical workflows, including:

• Localized referral pathways that reflect resources available in different communities
• Flexible documentation to support different models of care
• Streamlined medication management workflows, including easier documentation of medication changes and the clinical rationale behind them
• A refreshed, more intuitive layout to make the tool easier to navigate

These changes are shaped by what clinicians have told us about how the tool fits into their day-to-day practice. And we’re continuing that conversation as development progresses.

Why it matters

EMR-integrated tools have the potential to bring evidence and clinical support directly into the workflow, reducing the need to switch between systems and helping clinicians access relevant information at the point of care. But integration alone isn’t enough. Tools need to reflect how care is actually delivered.

That might mean supporting different documentation practices, accounting for local referral options, or making it easier to capture the reasoning behind a clinical decision. These details can make the difference between a tool that simply exists within an EMR and one that genuinely supports clinicians.

That’s where co-design comes in.

By working directly with clinicians throughout development, we can identify what creates friction, test what works, and continually improve our tools based on real-world experience.
